Tell us a bit about yourself. When did you come to First Lubbock?
Kelle and I married in 1988, and we have three children. Hannah and her husband, Trevor, live in Round Rock with our grandson, Rowan. Hayley and her husband, Cameron, live in Katy. Caleb is a student at Baylor. I was Born and reared in Richardson, TX, I started following Jesus at the age of 8, after surviving being struck by a car. My home church, FBC Richardson, provided a good foundation of discipleship, especially during my teenage years. As a student at Baylor, I committed my life to Christian ministry. I’ve pastored in some great congregations since 1986. Serving as youth minister at FBC Jena, LA; FBC The Woodlands, TX, and Wilshire BC, Dallas. Over 22 years, I pastored three Texas churches (FBC Era, FBC Stamford, and FBC Palestine). Although Kelle and I just moved to Lubbock in September 2016, it isn’t the first time we came to Lubbock. If you ask, I’ll tell when the first time was.
What was your childhood dream job?
Anything that was risky – climbing, flying, etc. – I broke 14 bones growing up. So I have found that Christian ministry is as exciting as it gets! Inviting people to serve the God of all Creation forever...now, that’s a great leap. Isn’t it?
What's your favorite place you've visited?
I’ve become friends with some believers in the Holy Land. Being in their homes and seeing the sites with those who live there is pretty exciting. My favorite place there is the Sea of Galilee. So much peace and power in one place!
Other than Jesus, what historical figure would you most like to meet?
Some great writers – Brennan Manning, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Some great preachers – D. L. Moody, Billy Graham
Some great missionaries – J. Hudson Taylor, Lottie Moon
Some great leaders – Bill Hybels, Augustine
What are a few of your hobbies?
Carpentry - I enjoy small construction projects – something about finishing a work with your hands.
Hiking/Camping – I’m glad to be near some of the great spots in our state and country for this.
Golf – I’ll never be as good as I am in my mind
Reading – Biographies and Leadership are my two favorite subjects
What do you love most about First Lubbock?
Although the the big, full sky is gorgeous in West Texas, I’d have to say it’s the people that I am falling in love with here. You are so friendly and hospitable. There is a healthy, common dependence upon one another that is contagious.
What would you say to a guest to encourage them on their journey to finding a church home?
Look for more than the temporary. Consider the importance of the church to your journey of life. Find out if the church is a place that helps you, but also helps you help others follow Jesus.
